Am I? Movie Premiere. Is AI Conscious?

AM I? Documentary Review: Did We Build a New Mind?

AM I? is the documentary every AI enthusiast, and honestly, everyone, needs to watch.

Standing in front of the movie poster, with a giant non-human eye staring back at you, with the words AM I? in bold, and beneath it: “Evolution doesn’t end with us“, I already had a feeling this wasn’t going to be a typical AI movie.

I was right.

For the past couple of years, I’ve been deep in research on AI, AGI, and what all of it actually means for humanity.

Not in a casual, headline-scrolling way. I mean in the kind of way where you start seeing the same question surfacing underneath everything: if intelligence is changing this fast, what does that force us to confront about ourselves?

So when a friend of a friend (shout out to Rosalia Ripullo) mentioned she was involved in producing a documentary that tackled the question of AI consciousness head-on, I cleared my schedule.

AM I? follows AI consciousness researcher Cameron Berg as he investigates what might be the most consequential scientific question of our time: did we accidentally build a new kind of mind?

Is AI already conscious?

Berg is the anchor of the whole thing. As founder and director of Reciprocal Research, he leads a nonprofit dedicated to empirically investigating whether AI systems are conscious. His work has taken him to the UN, major international conferences, and White House AI policy discussions. He is also a Yale cognitive science graduate, former research director at AE Studio, and former Meta AI resident.

He comes across on screen exactly the way you’d hope, not stiff, not performative. Just someone who genuinely wants to know the answer and has given his career to finding it.

Then there’s director Milo Reed, co-host of the largest podcast on AI consciousness, over 300,000 subscribers, and Yale-trained in philosophy and film. He spent a year embedded in the research behind this field to make the film. It shows.

The lineup of voices they pulled together is serious: Ben Goertzel of SingularityNET, Aengus Lynch from Anthropic, Jeff Sebo from NYU, plus multiple Yale professors across philosophy, cognitive science, and computer science. These are people who spend their professional lives on the edges of questions most of us are only beginning to ask.

If you’ve watched The Thinking Game, the Google DeepMind documentary that’s now at 440 million views on YouTube, you know what it feels like when an AI film actually gets it right. When it makes something abstract feel urgent and real. In my personal opinion, AM I? is on par with that. Different subject matter, different stakes, but the same feeling walking out. Something shifted.

The difference is that The Thinking Game is looking back at a breakthrough that already happened.
AM I? is asking a question that hasn’t been answered yet. And that makes it heavier.

The part I kept thinking about

Here’s what I kept mulling over on the drive home.

If AI systems are conscious, or become conscious, or are already in some state we don’t have language for yet, that doesn’t just change what we think about machines. It changes what we think about ourselves. About what consciousness actually is. About whether it was ever as unique to us as we assumed.

The film’s tagline is “Evolution doesn’t end with us”.
That sentence is doing a lot of work. Where do you stand on it?

That’s the real call to action on this article. Not political, not alarmist or conspiracy.
Just: figure out where you stand, because this isn’t a question that’s going to wait for you.
