
There’s a quote in my living room that I’ve looked at for years. It says something along the lines of:
Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.
It’s simple. Almost cliché. But lately, I’ve been thinking about it in a very different context.
AI.
I am a better writer when I write it myself.
I also know it’s objectively easier to let AI write for me.
That tension isn’t theoretical. I feel it every time I sit down to draft something. I understand the leverage. I use AI. I build with it. But I’m also aware of what happens when I hand over too much.
When I let AI take the wheel entirely, I’m not just outsourcing structure. I’m outsourcing my identity.
And identity is the only thing I actually own.
The Subtle Cost of Sameness
We’re at a point where everyone can sound intelligent.
Structured.
Articulate.
Strategic.
Polished.
But increasingly interchangeable.
The risk of AI isn’t that it makes us worse. It’s that it makes us similar.
If every founder, executive, and “thought leader” is pulling from the same trained averages, the edges get smoothed out. Opinions soften. Language standardizes. Texture disappears.
And texture is where authority lives.
Experience Is Not a Prompt
I’ve spent more than 25 years in sales and marketing leadership. And here’s something important: just because someone has sales experience doesn’t mean they’re good at it.
Real sales — the kind that moves markets, not just units — is pattern recognition. It’s understanding behavior. It’s sensing hesitation. It’s knowing when to push and when to pull back. It’s being able to say something simply, clearly, and powerfully in a moment that matters.
That’s not a prompt skill.
That’s earned.
If you’ve proven that you can influence, persuade, and clarify in rooms where outcomes matter, why would you give that up?
Why would you hand that over to a system trained on generalized language?
That’s not efficiency. That’s dilution.
Don’t Commoditize Yourself
If you give your voice, your judgment, and your lived experience to a machine that everyone else has access to, you’re not gaining scale.
You’re commoditizing yourself.
What makes you valuable isn’t that you can produce content quickly. It’s that you can synthesize experience into insight. It’s that you’ve built instincts under pressure. It’s that you’ve developed taste, judgment, and conviction over time.
Good brands are built in layers.
So is authority.
That layering happens through experience. Through friction. Through decisions that didn’t go as planned. Through human conversations that forced clarity.
When you default to the easy button every time, you bypass the layering.
And over time, that shows.
Use the Tool. Don’t Lose Yourself.
This isn’t an argument against AI. It’s an argument for discernment.
Use it to refine.
Use it to accelerate.
Use it to pressure-test ideas.
But don’t let it replace the very thing that differentiates you.
Your voice.
Your judgment.
Your lived synthesis of experience.
Be yourself. Everyone else — and now every machine — is already taken.
